Carbery 1000SB Superslim Bunded Heating Oil TankWith winter beginning to make its presence felt, there's no better time for heating oil users to get winter ready and check their oil tanks, according to TankDepot.co.uk supplier, Carbery Plastics Limited.

Carbery's Pio Ronan says, "Installed and maintained correctly, modern heating oil tanks will provide many years of dependable, reliable service. But nothing lasts forever; OFTEC now recommends heating oil tanks should be replaced every 20 years. Irrespective of the age of your tank, it makes sense to have it inspected annually by an OFTEC Registered Technician or similarly competent person. Failure to do so may invalidate any warranty supplied with the tank.

"Additionally, there are simple and effective steps heating oil users can undertake themselves to ensure their heating oil tank remains in tip, top condition all winter long.
  • Remembering that water and oil do not mix, check to ensure that all lids and caps are securely tightened;
  • Periodically check for organic matter and debris which may have gathered around the tank and remove it;
  • Because there's never a good time to run out of heating oil, make sure your heating oil tank contents gauge is in working order. Carbery recommends Apollo gauges, which can be quickly and easily fitted and allow you to check the level of heating oil in your tank outdoors from the warmth and convenience of being indoors;
  • Check for cracks in plastic tanks and rust on steel tanks. It's worth remembering that steel tanks rust from the inside out. So, no matter how good a steel tank may appear on the outside, it may be within thousandths of an inch of its life on the inside;
  • Check your home insurance policy. Since many policies do not provide coverage in the event of a heating oil spill, it makes sense to choose a policy which does;
  • When choosing a heating oil tank, ensure it is licensed and approved by the experts at OFTEC, CE marked and in the case of a plastic tank is fully compliant with European Standard EN13341. Always ask for a Declaration of Performance to ensure any new heating oil tank can be legally sold and installed in the UK and Republic of Ireland. All Carbery heating oil tanks are fully OFCERT licensed and EN13341 compliant.
"If you've any concerns about the condition of your heating oil tank, consult an OFTEC Registered Technician or a Carbery Approved Reseller," advises Pio.
