Carbery Urges Northern Ireland Oil Users To Comply With New Fuel Tank Regulations

9th March 2013
Carbery Plastics Limited - the leading oil storage tank manufacturer and TankDepot.co.uk supplier - is warning commercial, industrial and institutional fuel users, together with larger domestic oil users across Northern Ireland to ensure their oil tanks are compliant with the next round of oil storage tank regulations, which come into effect on 20 March 2013.

The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 set minimum standards for the storage of oil at commercial, industrial and institutional premises with a storage capacity greater than 200 litres. They also apply to larger domestic installations with a storage capacity of 3,500 litres or more. Single family dwellings with an installed capacity of less than 3,500 litres should already comply with Building Regulations.

The new regulations bring Northern Ireland into line with similar regulations in the rest of the UK. Fully retrospective, they apply to all new and existing oil storage installations at affected premises, irrespective of when the original tank was installed. A key requirement within the regulations is the provision of secondary containment at all affected installations. Compliance can often be achieved through the installation of a suitable Bunded Tank, by a competent technician.

Carbery’s John Switzer says, “As a responsible manufacturer, Carbery warmly welcomes any initiative which promises to effectively reduce the impact of oil upon the environment. As the latest deadline looms for compliance, Carbery has already seen a considerable increase in demand across our range of Bunded Heating Oil Storage Tanks and Bunded Fuel Point Diesel Dispensing Tanks in Northern Ireland.

“However, despite growing awareness of the regulations, many installations across the province remain non-compliant. Non-compliance can result in an Enforcement Notice being issued by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and potentially significant fines. We would therefore urge owners and operators at all affected premises to ensure compliance with the regulations at the earliest opportunity.”
