FPS Issues Heating Oil Tank Theft Warning

The Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) is warning heating oil users of the risk of fuel theft and advising them to increase oil tank protection. The warning comes amid reports of a significant increase in heating oil thefts across the country.
As heating oil has rarely been more expensive than it is today, the contents of domestic heating oil tanks are unsurprisingly an attractive target for thieves. To put things in context, when fill a typical 2,500 litres domestic oil tank can contain as much as £1,500 worth of heating oil. And as the FPS acknowledges, a quick look at local media confirms heating oil theft isn’t just an issue affecting a small number of heating oil users – it’s now regarded as a national issue.
Representing the downstream oil distribution industry across the British Isles, FPS is now suggesting consumers take steps to proactively protect their tanks:
According to FPS Chief Executive Mark Askew, the threat of heating oil theft is especially severe in many rural parts of the country. “Consumers in isolated locations, especially with tanks sited near the road should be especially vigilant. If you’re particularly concerned, consider relocating your tank to an area that is more secure, remembering to leave it accessible for deliveries. Fitting CCTV and/or security lights to monitor your tank can also go some way to deterring potential thieves.”, says Mark.
